How to use rewind tool?

I'm playing a romhack of Pokemon Emerald (Delta Emerald) and have softlocked in-game while I was trying to read the board in the Trainer's School. (I'm the kind of RPG player who will talk to everyone and read everything. I now realize that that was a bit of a mistake. My bad.) I'm going to reset the game, but since rewinding almost certainly would have got me out of this mess, I'd love to know how I could use it. I'm going to create a save state at the point of the softlock, so if you have any other solution, please let me know.
