Black screens at start, unless you remove the intro with gbata, then it atleast gets to the menu,

how ever, attempting to start the game just causes infinite black screen, and the logger is flooded with undefined instructions (and freezes it on my poor single core)

Yep. It's patch Thai version. I try vba-m svn 20 that can open intro. And then it freeze. It works only official vba.

Yeah the original works, so it must be something the patch did. (I know that was already said, I just wanted to cofirm).

In case I read correctly, svn20 is extremely old.
Use more recent versions from HERE:

20 can open intro.

i can get to the main menu by using a intro removal tool, but past that its just a black screen
